Pathology lab deals with the analysis of blood, urine, stool, body tissues to diagnose various health conditions, and its cause. These lab tests are included in our routine blood checkup to ensure our well being. Below are some common Pathology lab tests.
Liver Function Tests (LFT)
The blood tests under this panel are used to determine the health of the liver. Higher or lower test values indicate improper liver functioning and demand further diagnosis to determine the exact cause. LFT is also known as hepatic function panel. The tests included in the pane are listed below:
Your doctor may suggest an LFT test to:
You can appear for the liver functioning test at any time. There is no need for fasting. However, inform the doctor about the medicines you regularly take, including herbal medicines and nutritional supplements as they can affect the result.
The test is done in blood. The test procedure is simple. The healthcare staff will draw the blood sample from your arm. You can obtain the results in a few hours or maybe in a day.
Total Blood Count
The total blood count is a common blood test used to diagnose a broad spectrum of diseases and infections. The tests included in total blood count includes:
Your doctor may suggest a complete blood count to:
The procedure involved in this blood test is similar to all other simple blood tests. The blood sample will be taken from the patient’s arm by a healthcare professional. There are no special preparations required before the test. There is no risk associated with the procedure. You can avail results within hours or maximum in a day.
TSH Test
TSH test measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormones in the blood. These hormones are produced in the pituitary gland. When the amount of thyroid drops in blood, the pituitary gland stimulates to produce TSH. High or low levels of TSH indicate improper functioning of the thyroid gland.
Your doctor may order a TSH test if you’re experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism(a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone) or hyperthyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone).
Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
TSH test involves a simple blood draw at our pathology lab, which normally takes less than five minutes. The normal level of TSH is 0.4 to 4.0mIU/L. A value below this level is a sign that your thyroid is overactive, indicating hyperthyroidism. A value above the normal level is a sign that your thyroid is under active, indicating hypothyroidism.
Urinalysis
Urinalysis is a series of tests often used to detect Urinary tract infection(UTI), urinary tract injury, diabetes, kidney and liver diseases.
This test mainly involves checking the concentration, content and appearance of urine. Urinalysis is ordered to:
You will be provided with a container to collect the urine sample. Before you start, you need to cleanse your hands and genitals with a cleanser. First, urinate into the toilet and then start collecting your urine in the container provided to you. When you’re done, seal the container and return the sample as directed by your doctor.
Results of Urinalysis can have different interpretations. Abnormal results can be a sign that something is wrong, and it should be evaluated further. Your doctor may correlate the test results with clinical findings and the symptoms that you have experienced and ascertain the cause of abnormal findings through tests like Complete blood count(CBC), urine culture, basic metabolic panel(BMP), liver panel or renal panel.
