Microbiology Lab

Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms such as protozoa, archaea, fungi, virus and bacteria. Microbiology is a major discipline in biology as it is beneficial in identifying how these microorganisms cause disease, and in finding a cure for the disease caused by them. Microbiology is also used to learn all the characteristics of these organisms to ascertain how it can impact organisms around it, such as animals, human beings as well as discover how they normally live in their environment.

At Tesla Scans, we offer a complete range of Microbiology lab tests, such as blood culture, urine culture, pus culture, AFB stain, etc., that are used to spot microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses etc.

Blood Culture Test

The blood culture test can identify microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and other foreign invaders in your blood. Having these microorganisms in the blood may indicate  bacteremia, a bacterial infection. A positive blood culture can be a sign of bacteria in the blood. The test involves a simple blood draw in a microbiology lab. The test is ordered when your doctor suspects that you have a blood infection.

Urine Culture Test

Urine culture test detects microorganisms that cause Urinary Tract infection. UTI is caused typically by bacteria and is more common in females than males. Clean catch method, urinary collection bag method, Suprapubic aspiration are the different ways by which urine is collected for the test. A positive urine culture is a sign of bacteria or other organisms. This test can also identify which organisms are causing the infection, for instance, bacterias like Proteus and Staphylococcus.

Stool Culture

Stool culture is a laboratory test that detects bacteria that cause gastrointestinal or digestive tract infections. A doctor typically orders this test to check your stool sample for bacteria that cause infection. Our microbiology lab staff will culture or grow the bacteria in your stool to ascertain whether there are any disease-causing bacteria present or not.

Pus Culture

Pathogenic organisms, such as bacteria or fungi in the pus (a yellow fluid formed as a response to an infection) can be identified by a pus culture test. During the test, your pus sample is added to a substance that induces the growth of microorganisms. If there is growth, it means a positive pus culture, and if there is no growth, then it means a negative pus culture.

Throat Swab Culture

A throat swab culture test is a microbiology lab test which is performed using a throat swab to detect microorganisms in your throat that cause infection. The throat swab culture test is ordered when your doctor suspects that you have strep throat or any other bacterial infection. The test is performed by rubbing a sterile cotton swab over your tonsils, the back of your throat. Later on, the swab which contains the secretions of your throat, will be sent for analysis.

Pleural Fluid Culture

Pleura is a membrane inside your lungs, which is essential for the proper functioning of lungs. The pleural fluid culture test is a test that detects bacteria, virus or fungi in the pleural fluid. You need to undergo an X-ray, which can show whether you have pleural fluid accumulated in the small space between the pleura or not. In normal results, the sample doesn’t show any traces of any microorganisms, whereas an abnormal result is a sample that shows the presence of microorganisms.

CSF Culture

Cerebrospinal fluid is a transparent liquid that protects our brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal Fluid Culture is a microbiology lab test used to detect microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. The CSF required for culture is collected by means of a lumbar puncture or a spinal tap. The test can help diagnose numerous disorders such as bacterial or viral meningitis, brain and spinal cord damage, fungal infections, multiple sclerosis, to name a few.

Semen Culture

Semen culture detects pathogens that cause male genitourinary tract infection and helps find the right antibiotic for treatment. The test checks the presence of aerobic, anaerobic microorganisms and bacterias such as ureaplasma and mycoplasma. The semen sample will be collected and cultured in the microbiology lab to check whether there is a disease-causing microorganism or not.

AFB Stain

Acid-fast Bacillus is a bacteria that causes various infections, for instance, Tuberculosis. The test is ordered by your doctor when you have symptoms of active TB. For the AFB stain test, sputum, a thick mucus is collected. A positive AFB stain confirms that you have TB. AFB test also helps in the diagnosis of other infections caused by AFB, and also to monitor the effectiveness of TB treatment.

Gram Stain

Gram stain is a microbiology lab test, which is used to detect bacteria and sometimes fungi. Sputum, pus or body fluid, from the site of infection, is collected, and our staff will culture or grow the pathogen. Gram stain test is ordered when your doctor suspects that you have a bacterial or fungal infection. Since gram stain results are considered as preliminary, other tests such as an antibody or antigen tests are required to confirm a diagnosis.
