Serology is the study of serum and other bodily fluids. Serology lab analyses blood samples to help in the identification of antibodies and antigen in the patient’s serum and plasma, diagnose patients with certain immune deficiencies to identify diseases of public health significance. Serological tests are performed on blood and other bodily fluids such as semen, saliva, and CSF, which may contain antibodies when an infection is suspected. Serological tests also help in identifying and treating auto-immune diseases. The different types of serological tests include Flocculation tests, Neutralization tests, Hemagglutinin-inhibition tests, and are helpful in the diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections such as influenza, measles, yellow fever, rheumatoid arthritis.
